Manipulation of soft tissue eases stiffness, promotes circulation and tissue drainage, and provides muscle relaxation and pain relief.
Technical Details
The word massage is derived from the Arabic word mass, which means "to press". Many ancient civilizations used massage for treatment of various medical conditions.
Our therapist uses various techniques that are very complex and result in increased lymphatic drainage, circulatory improvements and general therapeutic effects. Lymphatic flow is caused by increased capillary pressure and capillary permeability, and increased interstitial fluid pressure. Massage increases the fluid pressure, and helps the fluid move to the lymphatic system. This fluid interchange and tissue movement produces what is sometimes called the flushing effect, which in turn brings in additional nutrients. The lymphatic system is part of the circulatory system, and a vital part of the immune system.
Massage can be as beneficial to your horse or dog as it is for humans! Here are some of the problems that could be relieved:
- Sore, stiff muscles
- Torn or stretched muscles
- Tendon or ligament weakness
- Joint stiffness or weakness
- Unexplained lameness
- Training or behavioral difficulties
- Relieves distress and anxiety
- May improve digestion
- May boost immune system
