Ultrasound therapy for horses and dogs has proven to increase cellular activity and circulation in damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments. There is a reduction in muscle spasms and an increase in connective tissue mobility. Ultrasound combined with stretching exercises will elongate muscle and reduce scar tissue restriction.
Technical Details
- Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound beam energy which travels through tissue. Sound waves are mechanical pressure waves measured in frequency. Audible sound has between 16 and 20,000 cycles per second or Hertz (Hz). Therapeutic ultrasound frequencies are much higher usually from 1 million to 3 million Hz, or 1 to 3 Megahertz (MHz).
- Depending on the settings used, the ultrasound can deliver thermal and non-thermal effects within the treated area. The combination of thermal (deep heating) and non-thermal effects makes this a unique and versatile threapy.
- Absorption is the transfer of energy from the sound beam to the tissues. Absorption is higher in tissues with high protein content such as tendons, ligaments, fascia, joint capsule and scar tissue.
- Therapeutic ultrasound can influence the remodeling of the scar tissue in that it appears to be capable of enhancing the appropriate orientation of newly formed collagen fibers, and also effects changes to the collagen profile from mainly Type III to a more dominant Type I construction, increasing tensile strength of the fibers and enhancing scar mobility. Ultrasound applied to scar tissues enhances the functional capacity of the these tissues.
